International law expert Maria Beatrice Deli will discuss the UN Sustainability Goals and the related challenges facing businesses in the future, as part of the Spring Business Lecture Series, Feb. 19, 7 p.m., in the AUR auditorium.

Professor Deli has extensive experience in international commercial and investment arbitration and is Secretary General of the Italian Association for Arbitration (AIA) and Secretary General of the Italian National Committee of ICC 鈥 ICC (International Chamber of Commerce) Italy. She is also the co-founder of ArbIt (Italian forum on arbitration and ADR or Alternative Dispute Resolution) and heads the editorial board of the Rivista dell'Arbitrato and Diritto del Commercio Internazionale.

In today鈥檚 world, business practices and human rights sometimes seem at odds: balancing the needs for businesses to be efficient and profitable, while at the same, protecting the rights of workers is a challenge that must be met.听
The UN, in the 鈥淪ustainable Development Goals鈥 set forth in its 2030 Agenda, is leading the way towards sustainable development with a plan to ensure public-private cooperation for a new win-win outcome in this area of human rights.听Sustainable development recognizes that eradicating poverty in all its forms, combating inequality within and among countries, preserving the environment, creating sustained and inclusive economic growth and fostering social inclusion are linked to each other and might be 鈥 in the long run 鈥 in the fundamental interest of business. 听
